MSNBC host Joe Scarborough came to the defense of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Saturday after President Trump lashed out at the GOP senator and called him a “pompous ‘ass.'”

“Mitt is a winner in so many ways that you will never be,” Scarborough, a vocal Trump critic and host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” tweeted in response to Trump.

The former Republican congressman argued that “history will be kind” to Romney, the GOP’s 2012 presidential nominee, adding, “You? Not so much.”

Romney called Trump’s behavior “wrong and appalling.”

The Utah senator is one of the few Republican lawmakers who have openly expressed concern or outright criticism about Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

Romney spoke out last month about Trump’s call with the leader of Ukraine in which the president urged the foreign government to investigate Biden.

The senator called details of the conversation “deeply troubling” after the White House released a rough transcript of the call.

Trump issued two tweets about Romney on Saturday morning, mocking him for his 2012 electoral defeat while noting that he declined to pick him for secretary of State.

In the first tweet, Trump told Romney to “wake up.” In the second, he wrote that “Mitt Romney never knew how to win.”

“He is a pompous ‘ass’ who has been fighting me from the beginning, except when he begged me for my endorsement for his Senate run (I gave it to him), and when he begged me to be Secretary of State (I didn’t give it to him),” Trump continued. “He is so bad for R’s!”
