Franklin Graham: Impeachment could cause US to ‘unravel’

Evangelist leader Franklin Graham on Wednesday cautioned that impeaching President Trump could cause the country to “unravel.”

Graham, the son of the late evangelist Billy Graham, has been a frequent supporter of Trump and said the Democratic Party is pushing for an impeachment inquiry because its members don’t accept the results of the 2016 election, the Religious News Service reported.

{mosads}“Our country could begin to unravel if an elected president is thrown out of office because of lies and the media,” Graham said in an interview with the news service. “It could be a devastating thing.”

The evangelist leader said he urges lawmakers to “look very carefully at where we are and first of all make sure that truth is told.”

He added in the interview he thought that impeachment is a “distraction,” and he’s “concerned” about the allegations made by Trump against former Vice President Joe Biden.

The House launched an impeachment inquiry last week following revelations that the president asked the Ukrainian president to “look into” Biden and his son during a July phone call.

Graham, 67, is currently on his eight-city “Decision America Tour” throughout North Carolina, a sequel to his 50-state tour for the 2016 election. He preached to thousands of people in Fayetteville, N.C., and plans to go to Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday and Asheville, N.C., on Oct. 13. 

The pastor maintains that his tour is not a Trump rally.

“I’m not encouraging people to vote for Trump. It’s not a Trump rally,” he said. “I don’t encourage them to vote for a Democrat either. But I do encourage them to pray for our country. That’s extremely important. If we don’t, we could lose our country. We need to pray.”

The president has other support from pastors across the country, including Pastor Robert Jeffress, who said a civil war would occur if Trump was impeached and then denied it was a prediction. 

The president tweeted out Jeffress’s quote on Sunday saying, “If the Democrats are successful in removing the President from office (which they will never be), it will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.”
