Trump administration will not grant protected status to Bahamians affected by Dorian: reports

The Trump administration will not grant temporary protected status (TPS) to people from the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian, according to multiple reports.

CNN and NBC News both reported that the administration ultimately decided against offering the humanitarian relief after acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan said Monday that it was being considered.

Granting TPS would allow Bahamians to work and live in the U.S. until it is deemed safe to return home.

{mosads}Bahamians can still come to the U.S. temporarily with the right travel documents, but will not be granted work permits.

The Hill has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

The Bahamas were hit hard by Hurricane Dorian, which was a Category 5 storm at the time. It battered the islands with rain and winds for almost two days.

More than 40 people have been confirmed dead in the island nation and thousands are still missing. Tens of thousands more are thought to be in need of food, water and medical help.

The Trump administration has ordered the termination of TPS for El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras and Nepal, but those orders have all been held up in court proceedings.
