Trump: I want reporters to go see migrant detention centers

President Trump on Sunday said that he wants reporters to visit migrant detention facilities at the southern border.

Asked if he would visit the Customs and Border Protection facility in Clint, Texas, which has been the subject of a number of reports, Trump said, “What we’re going to do is I’m going to start showing some of these detention centers … to the press,” according to CNN.

“I want the press to go in and see them,” Trump added. “We’re going to send people in. We’re going to have some of the press go in.”

{mosads}Trump also tweeted Sunday that the media was reporting “phony and exaggerated accounts” of poor conditions at border detention centers.

Several media outlets, including CNN, toured the facility in Clint last month.

That visit was prompted after a group of lawyers who visited the facility said they found overcrowding, dirty conditions and mistreatment of migrants being held there.

Trump’s comments also come a week after a delegation of 14 Democrats visited two facilities in Texas, including one in Clint, expressing outrage and describing inhumane conditions.

The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General recently released two reports detailing conditions in El Paso, Texas, and Rio Grande, Texas, facilities.

The government watchdog found severe overcrowding, migrants being held too long and dirty conditions at many of the facilities.
