Trump touts farmers’ access to Mexico, Canada: ‘Please make sure that you are treated fairly’

President Trump early Monday highlighted American farmers’ restored access to markets in border neighbors Mexico and Canada.

Trump in a post on Twitter noted the recent removal of tariffs the countries agreed upon last week.

{mosads}“They have both taken the tariff penalties off of your great agricultural product,” Trump said. “Please be sure that you are treated fairly.”

He added any complaints on the matter should be taken up with Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.

The Trump administration last week struck a deal to lift aluminum and steel tariffs on Canada and Mexico, taking a major step toward congressional approval for the revised version of the North American Free Trade Agreement, a deal between the three countries called the U.S-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

The agreement between the countries also ensured Mexico and Canada would lift the retaliatory tariffs they had imposed on several American goods, notably some agricultural products.

Trump has focused his messaging on farmers impacted by trade disputes between his administration and several foreign adversaries, saying last week that U.S. farmers would be among the biggest beneficiaries of a new set of tariffs imposed on China.

“Our great Patriot Farmers will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of what is happening now,” Trump tweeted. “Hopefully China will do us the honor of continuing to buy our great farm product, the best, but if not your Country will be making up the difference based on a very high China buy.”

China and the U.S. have engaged in a bitter tariff war amid an ongoing trade dispute that broke down recently as the two sides appeared close to reaching a deal.
