Undocumented Trump employees say they sometimes worked for no pay: report
Some employees without legal U.S immigration status of a Trump golf course in New York have said they were not paid fairly for their work.
Two workers told The Washington Post that managers at Trump National Golf Club Westchester made them clock out and then continue to do unpaid “side work,” while two others told the newspaper they were forced to work 60-hour weeks for no overtime pay.
“It was that way with all the managers: Many of them told us, ‘Just clock out and then stay and do the side work,’” former employee Jose Gabriel Juarez told the Post. “There was a lot of side work.”
Employees also told the Post that they were not given promotions, vacation days and health insurance that were given to workers who had legal status.
The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment. A company spokeswoman told the Post in a statement that the accounts by the employees were “nonsense.”
“The Trump Organization has extensive policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance with all wage and hour laws,” spokeswoman Kimberly Benza said. “This story is total nonsense and nothing more than unsubstantiated allegations from illegal immigrants who unlawfully submitted fake identification in an effort to obtain employment.”
Recent reports accused the company of routinely hiring workers without legal status while President Trump puts forth hard-line immigration policies. Following such accusations, the corporation reportedly fired some workers from its properties in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
The New York attorney general is investigating the country club and more than two dozen former employees were interviewed, the newspaper reports. A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office told The Hill in a statement that the office has received complaints regarding working conditions and wages at the Trump National Golf Club Westchester but declined to comment further.
