Meghan McCain hits Trump on National Former Prisoner of War day: ‘No one believes you care’

Meghan McCain on Tuesday knocked President Trump’s tweet honoring former prisoners of war after he previously attacked her father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), for being captured during the Vietnam War.

The president honored National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day on his Twitter account, saying “we honor the Americans captured and imprisoned by foreign powers while carrying out their duties to defend this great Nation.”

“No one believes you care about prisoners of war and ‘people who get captured,’” Meghan McCain responded on Twitter.

“The View” co-host was making a reference to Trump going after her father’s military service in 2015.

The John McCain, who died of brain cancer in August, served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. In 1967, his jet was shot down and he spent the next 5 1/2 years in captivity as a prisoner of war.

{mosads}“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said on the campaign trail. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

Meghan McCain has long called on Trump to apologize for the remarks and took a shot at him when she eulogized her father at his Washington, D.C., funeral service.

She told the crowd, which included the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump, that they were gathered to mourn the passing of “American greatness.”

“The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege,” she added.

Trump has continued to criticize the late senator since his death, including in comments during an official White House event last month.

The president complained that he was not given a “thank you” for McCain’s funeral.

He has also chastised John McCain over his level of support of veterans.

“McCain didn’t get the job done for our great vets and the [Department of Veterans Affairs] VA,” Trump said at an Ohio rally. “That’s why when I had my dispute with him I had such incredible support from the vets and on the military.”
