Poll: 43 percent say this is worst run federal government of their lifetimes

More than 4 in 10 Americans in a new poll say the current federal government is doing the worst job governing they’ve ever seen.

A CNN poll released Monday found nearly 7 in 10 respondents said the government is doing a bad job governing, with 43 percent saying it’s the worst “in their lifetimes.”

The poll was conducted Jan. 30-Feb. 2, shortly after the end of the longest government shutdown on record, which saw 800,000 federal workers furloughed or working without pay for more than 30 days.

{mosads}Of those surveyed, only 19 percent said the government is doing a good job of governing.

President Trump’s approval rating in the poll was 40 percent, with 55 percent saying they disapprove of the job he is doing as president.

That represents a slight uptick from 37 percent in a CNN poll taken earlier in January.

Nearly half of respondents (49 percent) said they think Trump’s presidency has changed the country “for the worse,” 7 points down from 56 percent who said the same in December 2017.

Forty-three percent said they think Trump has changed the country “for the better,” up from 39 percent in 2017.

Respondents in the poll said they were pessimistic about the likelihood of Trump and Congress reaching a deal to fund the government by a Feb. 15 deadline, at which point the continuing resolution that lawmakers passed last month to end the partial government shutdown will expire.

A majority of respondents, 64 percent, said they thought it was not likely that Trump and congressional leaders will reach an agreement, while just 34 percent said they thought it was likely. Trump has said that he will not accept a deal that does not include funding for his proposed border wall with Mexico, and has threatened to declare a national emergency to secure funding for the wall regardless.

The poll, taken among a sample of 1,011 respondents, has a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
