Trump disapproval rating at all-time high amid shutdown, Russia concerns: poll
President Trump’s disapproval rating stands at an all-time high in a new Politico–Morning Consult poll amid a record partial government shutdown and concerns about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Roughly 57 percent of voters said they disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 40 percent said they approve.
Fifty-four percent of respondents blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the ongoing partial government shutdown, pollsters found, while only 35 percent blame Democrats for the impasse.
{mosads}The results come on the 33rd day of the shutdown, which was spurred largely by Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion in funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“As the government shutdown enters its second month, President Trump continues to carry the bulk of the blame among voters for the stalemate,” Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president, said in a statement on Wednesday.
“In this week’s poll nearly half of voters (49 percent) say the president is responsible — up 6 points since the shutdown began,” he continued. “At the same time, 35 percent of voters blame congressional Democrats, up 4 points, while 4 percent of voters blame congressional Republicans, down 3 points.”
According to the poll, 49 percent of voters oppose construction for Trump’s long-desired wall, compared to 43 percent who back it. Seven percent of those polled said they would support the measure if it was the only way to end the closure, however.
Trump’s high disapproval rating also arrives as concerns mount over his relationship with Putin and as special counsel Robert Mueller continues his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The majority of the poll’s respondents, 57 percent, believes it’s likely Russia “has compromising information” on Trump, while 31 percent of those polled disagree.
The Politico–Morning Consult poll, which was released on Wednesday, was conducted from Jan. 18 to 22. The poll surveyed 1,996 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of 2 percentage points.
