Trump: Nauert ‘under very serious consideration’ for UN ambassador

President Trump said Thursday that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert is “under very serious consideration” to be appointed the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

“She’s been a supporter for a long time and she’s really excellent,” Trump told reporters following a speech about immigration.

“We’ll probably make a decision next week,” he added. “We have a lot of people who want the job and there are a lot of really great people, but we’ll be talking about that next week sometime.”

{mosads}Trump’s comments came a short time after several news reports indicated that he planned to nominate Nauert, who worked as a correspondent and anchor at Fox News before joining the State Department in April 2017.

Nauert has long been rumored to be on Trump’s shortlist to succeed U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, who announced alongside Trump last month that she would leave the post by the end of the year.

Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, said she wanted to “take a break” from public service.

Trump has largely remained silent on who he is considering for the job, other than to say he had a shortlist of five people.
