Poll: Trump approval steady after stormy week
President Trump’s approval rating has held steady in a new survey, despite the conviction of his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, on eight counts and his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleading guilty to felony charges.
Forty-four percent of Americans approve of the job the president is doing, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey, while 52 percent said they disapprove.
Another NBC/WSJ survey conducted largely before the news broke about Cohen and Manafort showed similar approval ratings.
{mosads}While Trump’s approval rating held steady, 40 percent in the new poll say he may have been involved in wrongdoing. Voters are split along partisan lines on the question, with just over half of Republicans — 53 percent — saying Trump was not involved in wrongdoing while 71 percent of Democrats said he may have been.
Additionally, 56 percent of voters say Trump had not been honest about special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.
Manafort was convicted of eight felony counts last Tuesday.
Cohen pleaded guilty to eight charges the same day, including one count of campaign finance violations, in which he implicated the president.
The latest NBC/WSJ joint poll was conducted from Aug 22-Aug 25 among 600 registered voters. I has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
