White House talking to Waffle House hero about Trump meeting

The White House has reached out to arrange a potential meeting between President Trump and James Shaw Jr., the man who confronted a gunman at a Waffle House in Tennessee.

“My understanding is that there has been an outreach effort to bring him here to the White House and I’ll keep you updated on that as I have more information,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during the Tuesday press briefing.

Sanders was responding to a question from American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan, who noted Trump has met with crew members and passengers of a Southwest Airlines flight that made an emergency landing last week.

Trump himself has not tweeted or spoken about Shaw since the incident.

A gunman killed four people and injured at least four more after opening fire at a Nashville-area Waffle House on April 23.

Shaw, a customer at the Waffle House, rushed the gunman and wrestled the gun away, according to multiple reports. Shaw later started a GoFundMe page for families of the victims.

Sanders commended Shaw’s “heroic actions” during a press briefing last week and Vice President Pence tweeted his thanks to Shaw last week as well.
