Trump accepted offer to join North Korea summit on the spot: report

President Trump reportedly accepted North Korea’s offer for a summit immediately when the South Korean envoy extended the invitation this week.

The president didn’t take the time to discuss the offer with his advisors before accepting, stunning the American and South Korean officials gathered at the Oval Office, The New York Times reported.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the president’s national security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster reportedly asked the president to consider at more length the risks and disadvantages of accepting.

Officials interviewed by the Times from US, South Korea, Japan and China all characterized Trump’s quick response similarly, and the Times concluded that it is characteristic of the president’s approach to foreign policy.

Trump in a surprise move on Thursday night announced that he had agreed to meet with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which would make him the first sitting president to take a meeting with a North Korean leader.

South Korean officials said that the North has agreed to stop their missile tests while the talks between the U.S. and North Korea were ongoing.

Trump on Saturday affirmed that he anticipates the meeting will go well and said he is confident North Korea will cease weapons testing while the negotiations take place.

“I think North Korea is going to go very well,” he said. “I think we will have tremendous success … they promised they wouldn’t be shooting off missiles in the meantime, and they’re looking to de-nuke. They’re gonna be great.”
