AP: Trump had lowest approval rating of any elected president in first year

President Trump ended his first year in office with the lowest approval rating of any prior president, according to polling data.

An Associated Press analysis of Gallup weekly polling data finds Trump averaged a 39 percent approval rating during his first year in office. The previous lowest average approval rating during an elected president’s first year in office was former President Clinton’s 49 percent approval rating in 1993.

Former President Obama held a 57 percent average approval rating at the end of his first year in 2009, and former President George W. Bush had a 68 percent average approval rating during his first year in office, according to Gallup.

Trump’s lowest approval rating in Gallup’s weekly polling, which was 35 percent, was not the lowest of any president, according to the AP. Former Presidents Truman, Nixon and Carter all had approval ratings drop below 30 percent for at least one week in their first terms.

Trump also spent more time with his approval rating below 40 percent than any prior first-year president, according to the AP.

Trump’s approval remains low as he enters his second year in office. According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, the approval of Trump’s job performance hovered at about 39 percent as of Tuesday.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday found more voters would give Trump an F on his first year presidential report card than any other grade.
