Ivana Trump: Trump is ‘definitely not racist’
Ivana Trump in a new interview defends President Trump amid backlash over his controversial “shithole” remark, stating that he is “definitely not racist.”
“I don’t see Donald as racist at all,” the president’s first wife said on the U.K.’s “Good Morning Britain.”
Her remarks come after the president faced immense scrutiny for reportedly describing several nations as “shithole countries” during a meeting on immigration reform with lawmakers last week.
{mosads}Ivana Trump said sometimes Donald Trump makes remarks that “are silly or he doesn’t really mean them.”
When asked why he might have made the remarks, Ivana Trump replied, “Who knows?”
“He has so many people telling him left and right what to say and what not to say, and things like that. And sometimes it maybe gets confusing. I honestly don’t know,” she said.
“But he is definitely not racist, I am sure of that,” she added.
Trump on Sunday also pushed back on claims that he is racist.
“No. I’m not a racist. I’m the least racist person you will ever interview,” Trump told reporters while entering Trump International Golf Course.
Last week, the president faced widespread backlash after The Washington Post reported that Trump referred to immigrants from African nations, Haiti and El Salvador as people coming from “shithole countries.”
The White House initially did not deny the comment.
Trump then tweeted on Friday that he did not say “anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country,” while accusing Democrats of making up the “shithole” remark.
