Trump team on inauguration protests: We respect First Amendment

The communications director for President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural committee says the team respects the rights of women planning a protest march on Washington for the day after the inauguration.

“We very much respect the First Amendment. And we understand that people choose to protest. As long as they do so within all laws, rules and regulations, they’re welcome to do so. And we’re here to hear their concerns,” Boris Epshteyn told CNN’s “New Day.”

“And we understand that people have concerns, but we welcome them to our side as well. We hope some of those will come to D.C., change their mind, instead of protesting, come celebrate with us.”

{mosads}Epshteyn, who served as a top surrogate for Trump throughout the presidential campaign, said he did not accept the premise that Trump has a “contentious relationship” with women.

The “Women’s March on Washington” is planned for Jan. 21, the day after Trump takes the oath of office.

Epshteyn also responded to reports that the inauguration team is having trouble finding celebrities to take part in the inaugural festivities.

“You know, this is not Woodstock,” he said. “It’s not Summer Jam. It’s not a concert. It’s not about celebrities. As Donald Trump tweeted himself, it’s about the people. That’s what we’re concentrated on.”

But Epshteyn said the inauguration committee will be announcing more entertainers shortly.

“We’ll absolutely be rolling more out. No question about it,” he said.
