Obama congratulates Villanova coach

President Obama on Wednesday phoned Villanova University men’s basketball coach Jay Wright to congratulate him on his team’s national championship win.

{mosads}Obama told Wright his team played in a “particularly exciting championship game” and called the win a “culmination of an impressive year for the team,” the White House said in a statement.

Villanova defeated the University of North Carolina 77-74 on Monday in what will go down as one of the greatest national title games ever.

Wildcats forward Kris Jenkins hit a buzzer-beating three-point shot to win the game just seconds after the Tar Heels’s Marcus Paige made a three-pointer to tie it.

It was Villanova’s first men’s basketball title since 1985.

The president invited the Villanova team to the White House to celebrate their victory.

Obama incorrectly picked the University of Kansas to win the championship in his annual bracket. He predicted the Jayhawks would defeat the Wildcats in the Elite Eight.

The president did accurately pick North Carolina to play, but lose, in the title game.
