President Obama on Thursday met with congressional leaders and the chairs of the national security committees to talk about the U.S role in tumultuous parts of the globe, including Ukraine, Iraq, Gaza and Syria.
{mosads}Obama requested the White House meeting to “update and hear from some of Congress’ leading foreign policy voices” before lawmakers departed for the August recess, according to a White House readout of the meeting. Vice President Biden also attended.
Calling the meeting “constructive,” the White House said it will continue to work closely with Congress on these issues in the weeks ahead.
Those who attended the meeting included Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), and Reps. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), Ed Royce (R-Calif.), Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.)
