Spain hits 1M COVID-19 cases in first for western European country

Spain has surpassed more than 1 million coronavirus cases, the most of any country in western Europe.

Spanish health officials reported 16,973 more cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country of 47 million people to 1,005,295, according to the Associated Press

More than 34,000 citizens of the country have died from the coronavirus, the country said, while health officials warned the rate of infection nationwide is likely higher than is being reported due to a lack of adequate and reliable testing.

“I want to be very clear,” Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa said Tuesday, the AP reported. “Some very hard weeks are coming.”

France has more than 900,000 confirmed cases and the United Kingdom has reported more than 700,000 cases, according to the World Health Organization.

The United States has reported more than 8.4 million cases, with over 220,000 Americans dying from coronavirus.
