A$AP Rocky found guilty of assault, gets no prison time
Rapper A$AP Rocky on Wednesday was found guilty of assault in Swedish court but was not sentenced to any prison time, The Washington Post reported.
The New York rapper was arrested on July 2 after a street fight in which he played a role.
After almost a month in detention, A$AP Rocky and two members of his entourage accused of assault were released from detention until Wednesday.
{mosads}They were charged with assaulting Mustafa Jafari over the course of several minutes in the streets of Stockholm in an incident captured on video. The rapper’s lawyers have insisted it was an act of self-defense and that the group was being harassed, a claim which the court did not agree with.
“Based on statements from two witnesses, the court finds that the defendants were not subject to a current or imminent criminal attack. Therefore, they were not in a situation where they were entitled to use violence in self-defense,” the court said in a statement obtained by the Post.
Prosecutors were reportedly pushing for a six-month sentence.
That punishment was not given because the “assault has not been of such a serious nature that a prison sentence must be chosen,” according to the news release.
The rapper’s case drew the attention of celebrities who lobbied for his release, and eventually President Trump.
After being told about the situation by Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, Trump began championing A$AP Rocky’s cause.
The incident has caused something of a diplomatic rift with Sweden, with Trump asking Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven to intervene in the case and Löfven declining.
