Dean Phillips announces presidential campaign: Watch live
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) announced Thursday that he will run for president against President Biden in the Democratic primary after previously signaling that he would not do so.
A spokesperson for Phillips previously confirmed to The Hill that Phillips, a three-term Representative, would file his paperwork on Friday, which is the last day that candidates will be able to file to get on the ballot.
According to the Federal Election Commission, Phillips’ statement of candidacy was filed Thursday.
The Minnesota Democrat has repeatedly called for a competitive primary instead of Biden running unopposed for the nomination.
In August, Phillips signaled he would not challenge Biden, but would encourage others to enter the primary.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was previously running in the Democratic primary until he ended his bid earlier this month and opted to run as an independent instead.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. EDT.
