Trump on message he left for Biden after leaving White House: ‘It was a nice note’

In a recent interview on “Meet the Press,” former President Trump said he left President Biden a note at the White House when he left office. “It was a nice note,” he said. 

“I don’t think you’ve ever gotten this question. But it’s been reported that you left a note for President Biden when you left office,” Kristen Welker said. “Can you give us a little sense of what you said?” 

Trump said he did leave Biden a note and took a lot of time thinking about it. 

“I’d love for him to do a great job, even if it was very bad politically,” Trump said in the interview, which will air Sunday. 

When Biden entered the White House, he called Trump’s message a “very generous letter.” At the time, he said he wouldn’t offer up the details of the letter because it was private. 

It’s reportedly a presidential tradition for the departing president to leave behind a personal letter for the successor. It was unclear if Trump would keep the tradition going, since he refused to concede the 2020 election. 

Former President Obama didn’t leave Trump advice in his message, but he offered “reflections.” He congratulated Trump on his run and said everyone, “regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.”

Recent polling puts Trump ahead of the other Republican candidates, which means a 2020 rematch between Biden and Trump could happen next year.
