Trump surrenders for historic fourth arrest: see updates

Former President Trump has surrendered to authorities in Georgia on Thursday evening following an indictment by a grand jury on 13 criminal counts stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state.

Trump will not enter a plea at this time. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) has requested arraignments for the 19 co-defendants in the election interference case just after Labor Day.

Trump’s bail is set at $200,000, and the order also places rules on his social media use and his ability to talk to co-defendants and witnesses about the case.

Trump arrived at the jail just after 7:30 p.m. ET, spending about 22 minutes inside being booked before his release. A massive motorcade and police presence accompanied him to the jail from the Atlanta airport and back.

Lara Trump predicts Georgia booking ‘solidified’ Trump as next president

Nick Robertson

Lara Trump, daughter-in-law to former President Trump, said she believes his booking on criminal charges in Georgia on Thursday “solidified” his chances at winning the 2024 election for president.

She decried the case against Trump as a political prosecution in a Fox News interview on Thursday evening.

“I don’t think it will work. I think people understand what is going on, and I think tonight just solidified Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States,” she said.

Fox News displays Trump’s mugshot following arrest in Georgia

Dominick Mastrangelo

Fox News showed its audience a mugshot of former President Trump after he was booked on criminal charges in Fulton County, Ga., on Thursday.

“Let’s just take that in for a second,” host Jesse Watters said as the image of Trump scowling and looking into the camera was displayed on the screen. “You do see some anger in the eyes, and I don’t like the ghoulish coverage of it.”

Watters suggested CNN, a frequent foil of Trump and various other hosts on Fox, “had the mugshot leaked to them before the rest of the media,” adding, “That tells you everything you know about the process.”

CNN was among the first news outlets to publish Trump’s mugshot.

Fake elector becomes fourth defendant to attempt move to federal court

zschonfeld

Shawn Still, one of the pro-Trump individuals who signed documents purporting to be the state’s valid electors, is attempting to move his charges to federal court.

Still, a Georgia state senator and the sole sitting officeholder charged in the indictment, is now the fourth defendant to do so. He has not yet surrendered.

He argues the charges must be moved because he was acting in his duties as a federal officer and will assert federal defenses, including immunity.

“Even if the Court were to find that Mr. Still did not act as a federal officer in his role as a presidential elector, Mr. Still would still satisfy the first requirement for federal officer removal because he—at minimum—was acting under officers of the United States,” Still’s attorney wrote, referring to Trump.

Ramaswamy calls Trump surrender fanfare ‘shameful’

tmaher

Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy lashed out against the media coverage surrounding former President Trump’s surrender to authorities in Atlanta on Thursday, calling it “shameful,”

“I think this is shameful, Laura,” he said in a Fox News interview with Laura Ingraham on Thursday. “This is an indictment not of Donald Trump, but of our national civic health.”

“That we have gotten to a place where we have a party in power that will use any charge in any jurisdiction — four at the same time — in the middle of an election, designed, mark my words, to stop their lead political rival currently from running,” he continued.

Trump’s surrender, a procedural step in his prosecution in a sprawling election fraud case, received wall-to-wall coverage from cable news networks.

When will Trump’s mugshot be released?

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has indicated they are releasing mugshots of defendants in the case daily at roughly 4 p.m. ET.

Thursday’s batch was sent well before Trump arrived, so it’s possible his mugshot is not publicized until tomorrow.

However, at least one of Trump’s co-defendants posted his mugshot publicly on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, before the sheriff’s office released the photo to the press.

Trump calls booking ‘a very sad day for America’

rbeitsch

Trump gave brief remarks before boarding his plane Thursday night calling his arrest “a very sad day for America.”

Trump repeated numerous gripes, including that he had a “right to challenge an election.”

“What is taking place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong,” he said.

Trump faces 13 charges, from making false statements and writings to violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, Act – a charge rooted in combating organized crime.

Two of those counts allege Trump soliciting a public official to violate their oath of office, in one case during a call with Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) asking him to “find 11,780 votes” to help Trump overtake President Biden’s vote total.

What to expect: Will Trump get a mugshot?

Trump surrenders for historic fourth arrest: see updates

Like any other criminal defendant in Fulton County, Ga., Trump is expected to receive a mug shot upon surrendering at the local jail.

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat said earlier this month that his office will follow “normal practices, and so it doesn’t matter your status. We’ll have mug shots ready for you,” according to WSB-TV.

Several of Trump’s co-defendants who have already surrendered have taken mug shots, including attorneys Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Jenna Ellis and his former chief of staff Mark Meadows.

If the former president takes one when he turns himself in, it would mark a change from his surrenders in three other criminal cases and make him the first current or former U.S. president to ever have to take one.

Judge sets Oct. 23 trial date for first defendant in Trump Georgia case

oalegre

A Fulton County Superior Court judge has set a trial date for the first of 19 defendants in a sweeping racketeering case involving former President Trump over efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results.

Judge Scott McAfee ruled that defendant Kenneth Chesebro’s trial will begin on Oct. 23, after the lawyer and key coordinator of the fake electors plot demanded a speedy trial. Chesebro asked the court earlier Thursday to expedite the scheduling of dates for his arraignment, pretrial hearings and trial itself.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis replied to Chesebro’s motion requesting the October start date in Georgia, which is four months earlier than the one Willis initially suggested for the trial – a timeline legal experts previously told The Hill was ambitious at best.

Hearing scheduled for Clark’s attempt to move case to federal court

zschonfeld

Trump Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark will get to argue why the case should be moved to federal court next month.

A judge has ordered a Sept. 18 hearing on Clark’s attempt to move his charges out of state court.

He is one of three co-defendants who are attempting to move their charges. But unlike the others, Clark is explicitly arguing that if he is successful, the other defendants’ charges must be moved, too.

The judge previously rejected Clark’s attempt to block his arrest in the meantime, and Clark’s bail was set at $100,000 hours later. He has not yet surrendered.

Trump slams Willis as he departs for Atlanta

Trump surrenders for historic fourth arrest: see updates

Trump took to social media to attack Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and declare it a “SAD DAY IN AMERICA” as he left New Jersey.

“Why is there so much MURDER in Atlanta? Why is there so much Violent Crime? People are afraid to go outside to buy a loaf of bread!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“One big reason is that failed District Attorney, Fani Willis…doesn’t have the Time, Money, or Interest to go after the real criminals, even the REALLY Violent ones, that are destroying Atlanta, and its once beautiful culture and way of life,” he continued. “This is yet another SAD DAY IN AMERICA!”
