A slight majority of Americans say that they disapprove of the job that President Biden is doing when it comes to immigration, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
The survey comes as Biden’s moves on immigration have spurred criticism from both the left and right. At the onset of his presidency, Biden rolled back former President Trump’s travel ban policy upsetting Republicans and recently he came under fire in his own party for going back and forth on whether to raise the refugee cap.
Fifty-one percent of registered voters in the May 3-4 survey said that they disapprove of the president’s strategy when it comes to immigration, with the strongest disapproval among Republicans and rural voters. By contrast, 49 percent of poll respondents said that they approve of the president’s efforts.
Eighty-three percent of Republican voters and 22 percent of Democratic voters said that they disapprove of Biden’s efforts on immigration. Fifty percent of independent voters said that they also disapprove.
Seventy-four percent of rural voters said that they disapprove of the president’s current approach to immigration. Fifty-six percent of suburban voters also disapproved of his moves while 29 percent of urban voters disapproved.
“Immigrants have done so much for America during this pandemic and throughout our history. The country supports immigration reform. We should act,” Biden said during his speech before a joint session of Congress last week.
The Biden administration on Wednesday said that the administration may not be able to meet its recently announced goal to lift the country’s refugee cap to 62,500 this fiscal year.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 939 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
