Poll: Trump approval on economy, jobs drops amid economic fallout of COVID-19

As the number of unemployed Americans reaches record highs, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds President Trump’s job approval on the economy and jobs has dropped from 58 percent and 60 percent, respectively, in a May 6 survey to 55 percent and 54 percent in one from May 13-14.

Though still above water, this is the most movement the poll has seen in these areas for Trump since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

The poll found waning support among independent voters — down roughly 10 points — seems to be driving the trend.

There was also a 9 percentage point drop in support among Democratic voters on the issue of stimulating jobs.

Support for Trump among Republican voters on the economy and jobs has remained steady, in the mid- to high-80s range.

Trump’s overall job approval remains steady at 50 percent among all registered voters in the May 13-14 survey.

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 950 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.18 percentage points.
