Warren is ‘leading’ Dem field in calling for impeachment proceedings, pollster says

Democratic pollster Pia Nargundkar said in an interview that aired Thursday on “What America’s Thinking” that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is leading the Democratic field in calling on the House to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

“I think her leading on this impeachment issue is just another case of her thoughtfully thinking through things, and being willing to take a stand where other candidates have been a little more wishy-washy,” Nargundkar, a senior associate at ALG Research, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Wednesday.

Warren last week became the first Democratic White House candidate to say the House should begin impeachment proceedings, and was soon followed by Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former Rep. Julián Castro (D-Texas) and Wayne Messam (D), the mayor of Miramar, Fla.

“I wouldn’t consider it desperate. I would consider it breaking out of the pack,” Nargundkar said.

However, on Capitol Hill, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Democratic leadership tried to rein in their members on the issue, saying during a conference call Monday that the move could be seen as a rush to judgment and could galvanize Trump’s supporters.

Still, Democratic leaders have not completely ruled out impeachment.

“I do believe that impeachment is one of the most divisive forces, paths that we could go down to in our country. But if the facts, the path of fact-finding takes us there, we have no choice. But we’re not there yet,” Pelosi said at the Time 100 Summit on Tuesday.
