Pollster: For Trump, ‘it’s been all about the base’

Pollster Lee Miringoff told Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” on Wednesday that President Trump spends most of his time appealing to his political base, which potentially puts him at risk in 2020.

“He hasn’t even tried to reach out, realistically, to any other groups, which is so atypical,” Miringoff, the director of the Marist Poll, told host Jamal Simmons. “It’s been the base, it’s been all about the base.”

The executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, Halie Soifer, added that Trump’s strategy could backfire on him in the 2020 election.

“It just shows that he represents his base. His base has been consistent since the 2016 election. He speaks solely to them, he represents them, and he’s not increasing his support among Americans, no matter what he does,” she said.

Trump enjoys high approval ratings with his Republican base, according to a new Hill-HarrisX survey, with 82 percent saying they approved of his performance in office.

Only 40 percent of independents and 17 percent of Democrats said they approved of Trump, however.

Forty-five percent of all respondents said they approved of how Trump is conducting his official duties, according to the poll.
