Political analyst Bill Schneider said on Monday that wealthy, educated voters feel conflicting pressures when it comes to their political loyalties.
“The wealthier you are, the more likely you are to be a Republican,” Schneider, a former senior CNN political analyst, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.” “The better educated you are, the more likely you are to be a Democrat.”
“That creates a problem for a lot of wealthy, well-educated people,” he continued. “They’re cross-pressured. They’re pulled in different directions.”
“If they vote their economic interests, they vote Republican. If they vote their values, they’re going to vote Democratic,” he said.
Exit polls from the 2016 presidential election showed that white, wealthy voters were among the key groups that voted for President Trump.
However, the 2018 midterms saw suburban, white women voting in favor of Democrats, a trend that was widely seen as having contributed to the Democratic takeover of the House.
