Republican pollster Conor Maguire said on Monday that evangelical voters are likely to prioritize President Trump’s policy agenda over his personal behavior.
“He absolutely is,” Maguire told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking,” when asked if Trump is appeasing evangelical voters who might otherwise question his actions through his policies.
“We’re talking moving the [embassy] in Israel [to Jerusalem]. Those are some of the things that people really stand for,” he continued.
“Appointing conservative judges and getting them through the confirmation process. These are things that evangelicals really care about, claims and promises the president made during the campaign trail,” he said.
“I think people are really focused on getting things accomplished,” he continued.
Maguire’s comments come after Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, said the president directed him to pay adult-film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal money before the 2016 election in an effort to keep them silent about their alleged affairs with Trump.
Despite negative news coverage of the administration, evangelicals appear to be sticking with Trump and the GOP.
Exit polls from the 2018 midterm elections, reported by Newsweek, showed that 75 percent of white evangelical voters backed Republicans in the election, which was widely seen as a referendum on Trump’s first two years in office.
