Briahna Joy Gray, the host of the Bad Faith podcast, called Democrats’ attempts to focus on former President Trump during the Virginia gubernatorial race “rather dispiriting.”
“The constant references to Trump have the air of an older high school athlete who’s still living in the glory days. Like, are we still framing our value only in the terms of someone who hasn’t been in the White House and almost a year at this point?” Gray, a former staffer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, said during an appearance on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
“You know, we are still in the middle of an economic crisis. I know that nobody on the Hill wants to talk about it, because that would be perceived as a referendum on how well Joe Biden has done to get us out of it. But the idea that people are still struggling in really meaningful ways, and the entire locus of the conversation is still on Donald Trump is rather dispiriting,” she added.
Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s campaign has sought to tie Republican Glenn Youngkin to Trump, who has praised the Republican candidate.
The podcast host’s remarks come less than a week before Virginia’s gubernatorial election is set to take place next Tuesday. Polling from this week has indicated that the two candidates are deadlocked in the race for the governor’s mansion.
A poll from Suffolk University released Tuesday showed that 45 percent of likely voters backed Youngkin while 46 percent backed McAuliffe.
A different poll released on Tuesday from Emerson College/Nexstar Media found that both candidates received 48 percent of support from voters.
