Philip Wegmann: ‘People just aren’t going to care’ about mask mandate after maskless Bowser photo

RealClearPolitics reporter Philip Wegmann on Monday said that while the recent photos of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) going maskless at a wedding may not have political consequences towards her, they may result in residents who “just aren’t going to care” about the mask mandate due to what he calls her apparent indifference towards her own policy.

This past weekend, Bowser was photographed attending and officiating a wedding soon after her indoor mask mandate for D.C. had gone into effect. She was also seen going without a mask while indoors, appearing to violate the policy she had enacted.

Wegmann recalled the political ramifications that occurred when California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) was photographed attending a dinner party at a high-end French restaurant during COVID-19 lockdowns in the state, partially contributing to the recall vote he currently faces.

“I think that in some ways, while this is different it’s also, you know, somewhat worse. Because while there was immediate change in California — at least politically — I think the result in D.C. is going to be that people just aren’t going to care,” Wegmann said while appearing on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”

Bowser has denied breaking her own rule, saying the wedding took place outdoors where mask mandates don’t apply and that she only took off her mask indoors to eat.
