Zaid Jilani discusses Western media coverage of Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Journalist Zaid Jilani said Monday on Hill.TV’s “Rising” that media in the U.S. and other Western nations only began really focusing on the rising tensions in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories after violence began escalating this year.

Speaking with co-hosts Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball, Jilani said he had analyzed news coverage of the situation going back to the beginning of the year.

“None of this was actually covered … not until there was actually violence, there [were] clashes in Jerusalem … did the media start covering it,” he explained, adding that the coverage of the bloodshed creates a “perverse incentive structure” for violent protests or attacks in the region.

“It’s really unfortunate because there is a big, sort of nonviolent Palestinian movement, particularly in the West Bank, that does protests like every week,” Jilani continued. “But that nonviolence, it isn’t interesting, or sexy, or exciting enough … so our media rarely covers that.”
