David Sirota discusses Democrats’ fight over lifting the SALT cap

David Sirota, the founder of The Daily Poster and former speechwriter for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, spoke to Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Friday to discuss the ongoing debate within the congressional Democratic caucuses over whether to end the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions.

Speaking with co-host Saagar Enjeti, Sirota noted that some of the same Democrats hoping to end the cap on SALT deductions, a move that analysts say would mostly favor wealthier taxpayers who do not take the standard deduction, were weeks ago pushing to limit direct payments under the COVID-19 relief bill to a lower income bracket.

“Many of the same Democrats calling for a repeal of the SALT caps were the people saying that they wanted to reduce who the stimulus survival checks were going to because they didn’t want them going to people who didn’t need it,” Sirota said.

“Now, some of these same Democrats are going out there saying we need a…we are going to withhold our votes, potentially take down Joe Biden’s next spending bill, unless it contains tax breaks, 85 percent of which go to the top 5 percent of the country,” he continued.
