HuffPost reporter Daniel Marans said on Thursday that disgruntled progressives among the House Democratic ranks could try to pressure Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to revise the latest coronavirus stimulus proposal to include some key progressive policies.
“The leaders of the Progressive Caucus, congresspeople [Reps.] Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) are at least going to try to sort of threaten Speaker Pelosi with the prospect of a defeat on the House floor by assembling the 18 votes that they would need, assuming it’s a party-line vote, which I think we can definitely assume,” Marans told Hill.TV.
Marans added that the progressive lawmakers would be looking for a federal guarantee of people’s paychecks during the pandemic and an expansion of the public healthcare subsidies that goes beyond the COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) health coverage that’s already in the bill.
