Maryland county councilmember proposes freezing rents at current prices

Montgomery County, Md., Councilmember Will Jawando said Wednesday that he is seeking to pass a bill that would freeze rent for residents of the county.

“I’m introducing a bill that will freeze rent at their current rates until after the crisis is over,” Jawando told Hill.TV. He said the freeze would last 30 days after the state of emergency has been lifted in Maryland.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has signed an executive order that put a moratorium on evictions throughout the duration of the pandemic, but Jawando noted that people who have been laid off or furloughed are still struggling to pay their rent.

Many state and local governments around the country has passed similar measures during the outbreak.

As part of Congress’s $2.2 trillion stimulus package, the majority of American adults will receive one-time checks of $1200. The aid package also made workers who had been furloughed eligible for unemployment benefits and raised weekly unemployment pay by $600.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has said that she wants the House to pass another stimulus bill by the end of the month.
