President Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said on Thursday that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is no longer the leader of the Democratic Party after recent surprise wins by progressives in Democratic primaries.
“There is no leader of the Democratic Party. It’s not Nancy Pelosi. Maybe it’s [Sen.] Bernie Sanders. Maybe it’s [former Senate Democratic Leader] Harry Reid. Maybe it’s [Sen.] Chuck Schumer,” Lewandowski told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton on “Rising.”
Speculation about a progressive wave in the Democratic Party and the future of Pelosi’s leadership post have dominated headlines in recent days after progressive New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated longtime Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the district’s primary on Tuesday.
Pelosi has downplayed the talk of revolt, saying that Ocasio-Cortez’s win is not a sign of a national shift within the party.
However, Lewandowski disagreed, saying the primary victory signals an ideological shift in the party at the national level.
“No one knows who the leader of the Democratic Party is, but what we do know is unequivocally is that they are moving to the extremes and moving further left,” he said.
