RNC chair says ‘doesn’t matter’ which Democrat Trump faces in 2024

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley is seen as he addresses the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority summit in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Whatley said it “doesn’t matter” which Democratic candidate former President Trump faces in the 2024 general elections, saying any Democrat would embrace the same policies of this administration.

In an interview Sunday on “The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt,” Whatley also cast doubt on the likelihood that Democrats would replace President Biden as their presumptive 2024 nominee, noting Biden would need to make the choice himself, which he seems unlikely to do.

“There is no process that would allow for them to have an insurgency and remove him from their convention unless he’s going to step down. And we certainly don’t see any indication of that coming out of his conversations over the last couple days,” Whatley said.

“Secondly, not a single one of those Democrats is going to put a different proposal on the stage than what Joe Biden has proposed. None of them are going to have different policy positions. All of them are going to double down on all of the same policies that Joe Biden has unleashed on America,” Whatley added.

His comments follow a clip showing Trump suggesting that Democrats, generally, do not have higher approval ratings than the incumbent president.

Asked whether he would rather have Biden or Vice President Harris atop the ticket, Whatley said, “You know, for us, it doesn’t matter. We are going to run our race.”

“As we saw in the debate, President Trump is going to hit his marks. He’s going to talk about what he’s going to do to make America great again, and that really starts with restoring the southern border, restoring our economy and restoring our place in the world,” he continued.

The interview comes as Biden’s wobbly debate performance had some Democrats doubting whether it’s wise to keep him at the top of the ticket. Meanwhile, a concerted push is underway among Democrats to reverse the narrative and paint Trump as unfit for the presidency after his debate performance when he lied repeatedly.
