- Apple will welcome employees back to the office with coronavirus tests to mitigate the spread.
- The tech company is one of many that are expanding their work-from-home options.
Apple will be administering coronavirus tests to its employees as they head back to work at the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters, Bloomberg reports.
Employees coming into the office will have the option to be administered a nasal swab test for COVID-19. Sources told Bloomberg that the company began incrementally allowing some workers, like hardware and software engineers, to return to the office for a limited amount of days in May.
Other new regulations will include restricting the number of people allowed in confined spaces, including elevators, and requiring temperature checks. The company had also reportedly closed many break rooms and does require masks around certain premises.
This comes as many companies begin to implement more permanent remote-working strategies as the pandemic continues. Leading tech companies, like Twitter, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter-sibling Square have all permitted either extended or permanent work-from-home policies.
The New York Times reported that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and CEO, told staff that up to half of the company’s 48,000 employees would work from home.
“It’s clear that Covid has changed a lot about our lives, and that certainly includes the way that most of us work,” Zuckerberg said. “Coming out of this period, I expect that remote work is going to be a growing trend as well.”
In May, 25 Apple stores reopened across the U.S. featuring updated sanitary protocols in line with local ordinances.
