Drug overdose deaths in US hit new records amid fentanyl crisis

U.S. deaths by drug overdose are continuing an upward trend that began in mid-2019, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 12-month total ending in October, 2021. As with many recent figures, the new totals set a record for annual deaths.

The fentanyl crisis is currently the major driver, with methamphetamines another especially deadly substance.
