California to lift most pandemic restrictions on June 15

Story at a glance

  • At the 20 million vaccination mark, California is charting a path to reopening its public sectors.
  • Contact tracing and mask mandates will still be in place.
  • “We will need to remain vigilant, and continue the practices that got us here – wearing masks and getting vaccinated – but the light at the end of this tunnel has never been brighter,” said Gov. Newsom.

On Tuesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) released a new step outlining the state’s next moves to reopen public and economic sectors as COVID-19 vaccine distribution continues.

By June 15, Newsom aims to have the Californian economy fully reopened, provided that the state’s vaccine supply is sufficient for Californians over the age of 16 and hospitalization rates remain stable and relatively low.

“With more than 20 million vaccines administered across the state, it is time to turn the page on our tier system and begin looking to fully reopen California’s economy,” said Newsom. “We can now begin planning for our lives post-pandemic. We will need to remain vigilant, and continue the practices that got us here – wearing masks and getting vaccinated – but the light at the end of this tunnel has never been brighter.”

The announcement says “everyday activities” and businesses can reopen provided they adopt “common sense” public health measures to continue to mitigate COVID-19 spread.

State officials will continue to contact trace to isolate potential cases and encourage Californians to obey the continued mask mandate.

“In order to take the next step, we must continue to do our part to keep this momentum moving in the right direction, and that means continuing to wear a mask and ensuring everyone who is eligible gets the vaccine,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly.

This is part of the state’s larger Blueprint for a Safer Economy, the official reopening plan for California. The 20 million vaccination hallmark was a critical component to move forward further in reopening economic sectors across the state.

This includes equitable vaccine access across the state for all residents over the age of 16 who wish to be vaccinated.

Other new provisions accompanying this step forward include conventions having a maximum of 5,000 people in attendance until Oct. 1, and travelers will still be required to adhere to health screenings and restrictions.
