Hurricane Ida has taken its first life.
“Tragically, we have our first death of Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. Please shelter in place and stay safe,” Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) tweeted Sunday night. “We will begin damage assessments and search and rescue missions as soon as it is safe in the morning. Please pray for Louisiana.”

The news was also confirmed by the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“APSO reports first death related to Hurricane Ida,” the office wrote on Facebook. “Shortly after 8:30 p.m. deputies received reports of a citizen possibly injured from a fallen tree at a residence off of Highway 621 in Prairieville. Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed that the victim is now deceased.”

Ida made landfall in Louisiana near Port Fourchon Sunday afternoon as a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 150 mph, according to Accuweather. One million people in Louisiana have been left without power, including the entire city of New Orleans.
Ida has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.
