A wildfire in northern California continues to rage out of control a week after it sparked.
The Caldor Fire is only 5 percent contained as of time of publishing, with volatile fire conditions contributing to the spread.
Last Tuesday, the fire spread through the town of Grizzly Flats, causing mass evacuations and destroying a number of buildings and cars. Authorities reported two civilians were injured in the fire as it spread through the town, and were both transported to local hospitals via air ambulance with “serious” and “severe” injuries, respectively.
Since then, the Caldor Fire has burned a total of 106,562 acres. Due to the fire’s low containment and an abundance of dry fuels, U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced the closure of multiple nearby national forests.

“To better provide public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions throughout Northern California, and strained firefighter resources throughout the Country, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of nine National Forests,” Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region said in a press release. “This closure will be effective on August 22, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. through September 6, 2021, at 11:59 p.m.”
The closed national forests include Tahoe National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Plumas National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Mendocino National Forest, Klamath National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest and Modoc National Forest.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
