Taking into consideration air quality, the trash or percentage of landfills in each state, population density, and dental health to determine each state’s bad breath, Maryland outweighs its competitors.
The remaining states rounding out the top 10, in order, are California, Florida, Delaware, Massachusetts, Alabama, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Mississippi.
Zippia also notes that the Midwest and states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas and Oklahoma, are some of the freshest states.
Maryland being the stinkiest state came as a surprise to some, but one radio DJ thinks he knows why Maryland stinks so bad.
“I blame [Matt Valdez],” host Eric Bickel of The Sports Junkies said about his co-worker. “That’s got to be your part of town.”
“It’s all the crabs!” Virginia resident Jason Bishop concluded, according to 106.7 The Fan.
According to the study, North and South Dakota are the two least smelly states.
