In a letter last week to President Biden, a group of U.S. electric companies urged the president and Congress to work with the companies to enact policies to reduce carbon emissions by 2030. The hope is to guarantee the electric industry reduces carbon emissions to 80 percent below 2005 measurements by 2030.
Among the suggested policies was the implementation of a clean energy standard, which would set gradual and increasing targets for cutting emissions for power companies to reach until hitting net-zero emissions. The means of cutting emissions could include switching over to utilizing wind, solar or nuclear power.

“A federal policy framework can be designed to support the power sector’s deployment of strategies that are technically feasible, ensure reliability, and maintain affordability for customers,” read the letter signed by 13 electric companies, including PSEG, Exelon Corp. and Talen Energy Corp.
While the letter didn’t include mention of Biden’s aim to decarbonize the power industry by 2035, the timeline of 2030 is on target with Biden’s goal to decarbonize the economy by 2050.
This month, the White House included a clean energy standard in its $2.3 trillion infrastructure package.
