A federal grand jury indicted four former Minneapolis police officers , including Derek Chauvin, on Friday for violating George Floyd’s civil rights in the 2020 arrest that caused his death.
The Washington Post reported Justice Department (DOJ) prosecutors said Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, will each face two counts, while former officer Thomas Lane will be tried for one.
Chauvin, who knelt on George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in April.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune previously reported the DOJ planned to arrest Chauvin on-site had the jury found him not guilty or declared a mistrial. Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced by Minneapolis courts in June.
DOJ officials brought the charges after an investigation by Civil Rights Division lawyers who spent months in Minneapolis, according to The Post. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in April that the DOJ will conduct a “pattern of practice” investigation into the Minneapolis police department, according to the Post.
