Elton John is postponing more than 20 stops on his U.K. tour as he recovers from injuries he sustained in a fall.

The iconic musician said in a statement he “fell awkwardly on a hard surface” over the summer and has “been in considerable pain and discomfort” since then.

“Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving,” the 74-year-old said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications.”

“I will be undertaking a program of intensive physiotherapy that will ensure a full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain,” he added.

The 22 canceled tour dates — originally scheduled to begin in November — will resume again in April 2023 in London, but he plans to be officially on the road again for his Farewell Tour in January 2022.

John said he plans to uphold his commitment to perform at a charity event for Global Citizen on Sept. 25, as he doesn’t want to “let a charity down,” and added that his performance at the event will be physically different from his usual performances.

“I know how patient my incredible fans have been since Covid halted touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer,” he continued. “I completely feel your frustrations after the year we’ve had. I promise you this – the shows will return to the road next year and I will make sure they are more than worth the wait.”
