Peter R. de Vries, known for his investigative crime reporting, was shot while leaving RTL broadcasting studio, according to authorities.
“He was seriously wounded and is fighting for his life,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said at a news conference. “He is a national hero to us all. A rare, courageous journalist who tirelessly sought justice.”

Three suspects have been detained in relation to the shooting.
De Vries garnered acclaim for his journalism detailing the 1983 kidnapping of beer tycoon Freddy Heineken, as well as his reporting on the 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, for which he won an International Emmy Award.
De Vries remains in critical condition.
