Wedding expert: Rep. Frank’s vows ‘were extremely unique’

At least one marriage guru is giving her seal of approval to the vows Rep. Barney Frank and James Ready exchanged in front of 300 guests at their weekend wedding.

The retiring Massachusetts Democrat, 72, became the first congressman in a same-sex marriage when he tied the knot Saturday in Boston.

{mosads}And the lawmaker made sure to add a bit of political punch to the ceremony, which was officiated by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D). In wedding vows released by the congressman’s office, Frank and Ready, a 42-year-old small-business owner, promised to love each other and be each other’s best friend:

In sickness and in health,

In Congress or in retirement,

Whether the surf is up or the surf’s flat,

For richer or for poorer,

Under the Democrats or the Republicans,

Whether the slopes are powdery or icy,

Whether the book reviews are good or bad,

For better or for worse,

On MSNBC or on Fox,

For as long as you both shall live.

Charanna Alexander is an expert when it comes to “I dos.” As the founder of Love Ink, Alexander helps couples with writer’s block pen their vows and speeches for special occasions.

The lovey-dovey word pro tells ITK in an email, “I thought that Rep. Frank’s vows were extremely unique and fitting for a political couple. The combination of traditional vows mixed with lighthearted political plugs showed that they weren’t afraid to step outside the box when writing their vows.”

The marriage scribe says she appreciates the playfulness of the politically charged wedding pledge: “Humor is often a reflection of a fun, loving relationship and should not be excluded from the words that govern a marriage. However, as with anything, moderation is key. You never want the sentiment of love and commitment to get lost in levity.”

Alexander adds, “I tell my clients that their vows should be a reflection of their personalities and their special brand of love.”
