Handle with care: Senator’s house on the move

A former senator’s house is hitching a ride in order to become a museum.

The childhood home of the late Sen. Ralph Yarborough (D-Texas), which currently sits in the Lone Star State’s town of Chandler, has been lifted up and is poised to be moved down the street from its longtime spot, local TV affiliate KYTX reports.

{mosads}The cream-colored abode will become a museum dedicated to the life of the Democratic lawmaker, who served from 1957-1971.

The senator, who died in 1996 at age 92, was a proponent of Great Society spending programs.

Another historical factoid for history nerds: Yarborough was in a nearby car when President Kennedy was assassinated. “Smilin’ Ralph,” as he was dubbed, used the campaign slogan “Let’s put the jam on the lower shelf so the little people can reach it,” according to Daily Kos.

It reportedly took museum supporters two years to raise the cash to move the more than century-old digs.

The big heave-ho is reportedly scheduled to happen on Saturday, as long as it doesn’t rain.
