Q: What will you wear to the Inaugural ball?
• Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.): “A variety of things. I do have a great dress, but you’ll have to see. There might be a whole metallic thing going on because, you know, liven things up. Age down the caucus.”
• Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.): “A black two-piece zip top. Something flattering for my not-so-great figure. I have a friend in Milwaukee. It was handmade by someone who is a fashion designer.”
• Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.): “I have a gown that I wore to Clinton’s [Inauguration]. It’s black and made by a local [California] designer named Lily Sami.”
• Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.): “I am wearing the red dress that I wore to the Congressional Black Caucus Institute event over the summer. Patti Labelle sang and said, ‘Where’s the lady with the red dress who asked me to sing this song?’ Everyone was talking about it. It’s by St. John, a two-piece. [I’ll wear] silver shoes and [carry] a silver bag.”
Editor’s note: The song Brown asked Labelle to sing was “The Lord’s Prayer.”
• Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.): “I don’t buy by designer. Maybe something long and knit; I have to see how the weather is. Something light-colored. I don’t wear black too much.”
• Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.): “I’m wearing a dress that I got at the Nordstrom after-Christmas sale for $168. It’s black-and-white and long.” Klobuchar said the dress is not the warmest. “Hey, for me it’s summer. It’s 25 below in Minnesota. [Here] I won’t need a coat.”
• Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.): “I’m wearing a purple gown — I think the designer’s name is Lanvin — and I have nothing else to go with it yet.”
• Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii): “I have no ball gowns. I have these beautiful jackets that are made [by] a designer in Hawaii, and I’m wearing those over a long, plain black dress.”
• Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.): “I brought several gowns with me. I have a constituent who’s actually a designer. He’s made a beautiful, full-length, jeweled purple gown with long sleeves for me. He also made a beautiful, off-the-shoulder, full-length red gown. It has a slight train in the back and beaded red leaves with embellishment. We’re bringing glamour back.”
